Western Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
I have been fortunate enough to be involved in two Antarctic field seasons. During the summer of 2010-2011, I was a part of a small group of scientists from Argentina and Australia, heading down south to work with leopard seals. We collected a range of data in order to monitor any changes occurring in this top predator, and attached several satellite tracking devices to monitor their movements. The data from these trackers is contributing to my PhD investigation on mammalian home ranges.
In December 2011, I carried out acoustic recordings of leopard seals aboard the Ocean Expedition vessel, Australis. The calls recorded can be used to calculate the density of seals present and related back to environmental features that are important to the seals, such as key foraging areas. Hervey Bay, Australia
I was a field assistant on a project developing a non-invasive technique to monitor the health of great whales. This involved collecting expired air or "blow" samples from humpback whales in Hervey Bay, Queensland. We were working with the whale watching industry and the public to complete this work.
